We have some beautiful news to share with you from Prep 6 – our deputy head girl Meli has been judged as a winner of a nationwide poetry prize!
Meli is the 2025 Winner of the Portugese Spotlight primary school category of the prestigious Stephen Spender Prize – an annual competition for poetry translation which each year focuses on one different widely-spoken language.
Her beautifully illustrated poem, Sea, took an original Portugese poem, No Mar by Lalau e Laurabeatriz, which Meli translated into English with the help of her grandmother. Her work also wins her a well-deserved Head’s Commendation from our Headmaster Mr Hibbert.
The Stephen Spender Trust is inspired by the cultural activism of English poet, essayist and champion of international literature Sir Stephen Spender CBE (1909-1995), whose work concentrated on themes of social injustice.
