Walk like an Egyptian

Walk like an Egyptian

Burying a pharaoh was the theme for an amazingly atmospheric interactive Egyptian Day enjoyed by our children in Prep 4.

We were so lucky to spend all day with the incredible Kathryn from The History Van who – through hands-on artefacts, writing activities, special food and even interpretative dance! – immersed the children in all things Ancient Egypt.

The morning was spent discovering Ramses II through scribe writing, scarab beetles and a ceremonial dance devised by the children, and – after a lunch of the kinds of foods the Egyptians would have enjoyed – the afternoon was spent exploring the contents of a pyramid tomb, and preparing a body for mummification!

Safe to say it’s a day the children won’t forget in a hurry!

Elsewhere this week, authentic attire transformed our Prep 2 class into Victorian urchins for a trip to the Thackray Museum of Medicine, in Leeds. The morning session was a workshop on nursing and Florence Nightingale, and the afternoon a chance to discover the downright grubby state of a Victorian ‘Disease Street’.

Meanwhile spear-wielding hoplite soldiers, spectacular Greek gods, and Athenian villagers in white togas transformed an ordinary Friday for Prep 6 as part of their History learning.

The Ancient Greece themed day included making our own Greek salads and enjoying a special banquet.

Thank you so much to all of our families for the time and effort spent in sourcing such colourful costumes for a week of very special themed days – the children have been so excited, and that bubbling enthusiasm for bringing learning to life really has brought such joy to our school.
