A very exciting day at Mylnhurst, thanks to our friends at South Yorkshire Police!
The children had the opportunity to clamber inside a police van, try on uniform, hear the siren and see the blue flashing lights – and, most importantly, meet the police and learn how they help keep our community safe.
They asked some fantastic questions, including:
“What’s the funniest case you’ve had to solve?” (Runaway animals!)
“How long do you work?” (8-hour shifts, sometimes extended to 12 for major incidents)
“How do you get into policing?” (South Yorkshire offers a degree scheme while you work)
“Have you been in a police chase?” (Only traffic officers do car chases, but foot chases are a regular thing!)
“Do you work with dogs?” (Not personally, but the K9 units are amazing!)
“Do you carry weapons?” (No, but the firearms team is highly trained and uses them only in serious situations with authorisation.)
All the children knew how to call 999 in case of an emergency and, importantly, how to stay on the line if they call by mistake to avoid wasting valuable resources.
A huge thanks to SYPolice for taking the time to come and share such valuable knowledge with us!
