To coincide with their study of Sikhism in RE, Prep 5 visited Sheffield’s only Sikh Temple, or Gurdwara – Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
The temple is named after the 17th century Indian spiritual leader who is revered as the last of the human Sikh Gurus, and in this picture the children are watching the priest singing a hymn from his Guru Grant Sahib, the holy book.
They then went to the langar hall – the community kitchen of a gurdwara, which serves meals to all, free of charge, regardless of religion, where people sit on the floor and eat together – and joined in the communal act of sharing some simple food.
A member of the Sikh community was present for the children’s visit, as well as the temple priests, to explain about Sikhism and the functioning of the gurdwara.
A fascinating experience for all.
